About 3 months ago I was diagnosed with an early onset case of FAFSAD Disease. It was devastating but not unexpected news - I knew something was wrong. "Flat Ass From Sitting All Day" Disease, (also known as FAFSAD) occurs when a freelance artist neglects to get off aforementioned ass, take breaks, and even feed oneself. Freelance artist instead chooses to stay firmly planted on ass, and thoroughly engrossed in work. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery, and my first move was to find a standing desk. NOT an easy task - unless you’re up for spending boatloads of cash. Personally, when it comes to treating my FAFSAD - I’m on a buttdget.
I finally found a somewhat creative solution that fit my needs perfectly - a shop desk! That’s right, a good ol fashioned shop desk, just like you’d find at your local auto repair shop. It’s awesome, I’ve got all sorts of little storage areas, and it gives me a reason to shout to my husband "hey buddy, can I get an oil change?"

What I Love About My Stand Up Desk
- Slots to store file folders and other useless crap.
- I rest my arms on the top, scoot the keyboard back and it gives me a nice, comfortable position for my hands and arms.
- The screen height is positioned at eye-level.
- The legs are adjustable, just in case you’re not 5′7".
- It was easy to assemble, I watched my husband do it in less than an hour :)
- The Sassy sign & family pics do not come w/the desk.

I’ve worked standing up at a desk for about 26 years now and I much prefer it to sitting at a traditional desk. I do have a great ergonomic drafting stool that is the right height for sitting - but I usually just lean against it. No FAFSAD Disease here!
I love this article! However, I must correct you just a bit. FAFSAD is a disease that not ONLY effects freelancers, but also addicted entreprenuers and online shoppers.

You’re so smart! I love the idea of a standing desk, but don’t have the budget. This is a great find. Thank you for sharing.
I’m also glad to hear there are others who get so engrossed in work they forget to look up…

I like to lean back when working, I find it more relaxing and it doesn’t put too much strain on my ass and transfers the pressure to my back. No FAFSAD here either!
Hilarious post by the way.
OMG how funny! I, however, need to change the first F in FAFSAD to FAT! My immediate fix is to sit on my exercise ball and bounce when I’m not actually typing. great post.
