The million dollar question in freelancing - how to track THE BILLABLE HOUR. Ugh. Like most of you, I’ve tried everything:
- various web apps and online solutions
- excel spredsheets
- handwritten notebook
- Quickbooks
It’s time to rate and review the latest in time tracking. But first I’d like to get some feedback on your timekeeping experiences. Please feel free to leave comments on why you like the solution you’ve chosen!
What time tracking tool have you found most effective?

I took the poll and answered Excel spreadsheets, because that is all I have used — so far. I’m in the market for something else, so I’m checking out all the tools you mentioned. I’ll be interested in the final results. Great idea!

You can download printable time tracking sheets from my site at http://www.thekuehngroup.com/projects/time/ . They’re free to use, and will help you build a record of where you’ve spent your time, allowing you to accurately go back and bill for every hour you’ve spent working on projects. Enjoy!
I found ToDoList a while ago, and initialy that was just a useful utulity for tracking current tasks. But now it also includes a time-tracking functionality which is very handy. Just don’t forget to start/stop the timer. And once you start time on a new task, the previous task’s timer stops. Take a look, the utility is very small in size and free.
Time59 (www.time59.com) is a web-based app providing time tracking, invoicing and accounts receivable functions. Free 30 day trial then only $19.95 per year for unlimited use.
I voted Outlook Journal but I’m going to try ToDoList out and see if I like that. This is a wonderful site.
Hi,
I would also like to suggest Fanurio http://www.fanuriotimetracking.com which does both time tracking and invoicing (I’m one of the people involved in this project).
Fanurio is a desktop application designed to help freelancers manage their work and be paid for it. It can do basic project management, time tracking and invoicing in order to have all the functionality in one place.
Cheers,
Cosmina
